Question about the working register and __param1

Is __PARAM1 the first byte of the "W" Working Register?

I have not been able to confirm, if I call a subroutine and send a byte to that subroutine containing a block of assembly code. Will that byte will be in the W register or if I need to add __param1 to the assembly code.
