Issue with First New Post

I have a "personal problem" with the way the "go to first new post" feature is supported in vBulletin, that I first came across some years ago on the AVS Forum: Posts in threads are "new" only if the post was added since the last time you logged off.

In the old version of the Parallax forums, the unread status was tracked per-thread, and did not depend on when you logged on or off.

Now I am still at the stage where, in some forums, I am reviewing almost all of the threads, because I never know when I will learn something new, e.g. the Propeller Forum. Other forums I read less regularly and less thoroughly, e.g. the Sandbox, Completed Projects, Sensors, etc. So, if today I read only the Propeller Forum, then tomorrow I don't know what I missed in the other forums. I didn't have this problem with the previous forum software.

Now, I know that vBulletin has some ability to do this. The FAQ says:
If you are logged in, the 'Today's Posts' link will change to 'New Posts', which gives you a listing of all threads that have been created or updated since your last visit.

The administrator can also set up the forums so that each thread you read is marked in the database. If this option is set, then new threads (or threads with new posts) will not be marked as read until you have actually read them.

There is a built-in time limit to this, however, that will automatically mark all threads as 'read' after a set number of day, whether you really have read them or not. The default setting is 10 days, but the administrator could make this higher or lower.
Using this option would make my life a little simpler, although 10 days (give or take) for me might be a little short. I understand that this feature does take quite a bit of space in the database for per-thread/per-login tracking, so it is a function/space/time trade-off.

Now, I could just stay logged in always, but I suspect that the vBulletin software will detect a lack of activity, and automatically log me out, which doesn't really solve the problem.

When there is a little breathing room after putting out more important fires, I sure would appreciate the Parallax Web folks taking a look at this. Thanks.

I have added this to my list. The good news is that we have lots of space available in the database and the host hardware is quite capable of supporting the extra load. We will come back to this as soon as the major fires are out.

We had mayhem when we moved this from Yahoo Groups back in 2004. I think I promised myself that I would never do that again. Must of had a senior moment.
