Display name permanent?

I am unclear if this is permanent.
Do we really have to use our display name now? I would much rather use the original login I created.
It seems to me that parallax could email info and new instructions to all current users. The first thing I knew of the new forums today was when I got a 404 page not found. I assumed the forums were down. Some link somewhere got me to the new page, but then I could not log in. Then I had to find the new instructions in an unfamiliar forum.
