Position of a shaft

Hi, is there any way to know the angle of position of a motor shaft with reasonable to high precision? The motor is not supposed do a full rotation, so I was doubting that rotary encoder or quadrature would be optimal, or maybe it is?
I thought about adding a potentiometer, but I want to avoid the added friction.

Anything will have some friction. U.S. Digital (and others) sell absolute encoders that output the position of a shaft. A potetionmeter or quadrature encoder would also work. For the quadrature encoder you will need to figure out a way to get absolute position at power on. Turning the shaft until you trip a limit switch could work. There are aslo quadrature encoders with an extra index output that would work.

Hey thanks, the miniature absolute magnetic shaft encoder from US Digital was exactly what I was looking for!
