USB programmer

Just went to start a new stamp project and of course my new laptop doesn't have the old serial port.
Is there a converter to change USB to serial or anthoer method? I don't want to have to splash huge money for a development board with a USB connection, its way too expensive to be worth it.

Many USB-serial adapters to pick from, but not all work. Those using the latest FTDI drivers work reliably. Check the sticky thread at the top of the Stamp forum for recommendations.

Can't find one in the UK (not yet anyway).

The adapter you showed will not work for programming any of the Parallax controllers. The main reason is that it doesn't provide the handshaking lines like DTR. Parallax has a distributor in the UK. They should carry Parallax's adapter.

If you have Radio Shack's in the UK I know their GigaWare cable works. It is over priced though.

One good thing about having an RS-232 port is that it is a snap to build programming plugs for many common micro controllers.

I just got a "digitus" usb to serial converter from conrad.com,
it was about 10 euro, has the ft232rl chip and works on mac and pc.

Here is a little picture
of it with a basic stamp.
