Hi,
·The kids and I have been garden tractor pulling this summer. Sooner or later I'm going to add electronic ignition to there old cub cadet tractor ( one was built in 66' and the other in 79') ,but for now·we are using the old points and coil .Anyone have any idea of what kind of circuit I need to pick up the 12 volt·point to coil signal·to feed a propeller·powered tach?

Brian

·Ps , here is a random youtube video of garden tractor pulling·I found to give and idea what we are doing

Following is a google search for the words tachometer schematic. This comes up with some good stuff. One is an images link and one of the images shows an optical isolator which would seem to be a good idea!...

I know I'm a little late, but here's the link to a circuit from a discontinued Propeller based board:
    www.parallax.com/Portals/0/Downloads/docs/prod/prop/28205-PropellerControlBoard.pdf
On the last page, in the "Inputs" section, there is a tachometer input circuit that you might be able to use/adapt. Even though it is in the discontinued section of the store, this is the board they use in the Propeller QuadRover.

I bought one of the transistorized ignitions from:

    http://www.kirkengines.com/

Works great. Good Guy. I think the points, functioning as an on-off switch only, could power a tach. He might be able to help.

I have one myself, built, but not installed. I also have an old Cub Cadet (with a REAL clutch) that I have yet to grab from my dad. The old motor finally blew years ago, and I plan to drop a new one in. The old CC's are AWESOME tractors!!!!!!

·Thanks' everyone for the good info ,Parkso you have it right about cubs being cool tractors. Here is a picture of the pulling fleet ,dad's (mine)puller still needs alot of work,it has a kubota diesel and when the turbo is added should put out 100+ hp.

·I still want to add an onboard propeller to log data but that's a winter project.

Try using a H11L1M opto-isolator. On my breadboard a 2.7K ohm resistor between the signal and pin one is working nicely. With the chip powered with 3.3 volts and a 270 ohm pull-up resistor between pin six and four I'm getting a nice 3.3 volt signal for my Propeller input pin. This circuit is an inverting Schmitt trigger so the signal hash from your kettering type points ignition should be filtered out. My O-scope says its good but I'm still writing spin code for the acid test.

    Brian,

That's AWESOME!!! Mine looks like a mix of both of yours. I have the taller rear tires. Can't remember the model though.

The Velleman link I provided only works with 2+ cylinders. I realized that after I posted. Sorry about any possible confustion. There might be a way it could be modded to work with one. But, you've already solved your problem, so now it's moot.

100+HP on a tractor like that has got to be awesome!!!!

Good luck and keep us posted!

    Parkso,

·Here is what 100+ Hp looks like in a garden tractor (earth friendly·people might not want to·watch at this:-).

    Yarisboy,

·I ordered a couple of H11L1M from digi-key today ,let's see if we can have some fun, thanks'.
