I just had a thought about POV displays.
If you had a wheel spinning at high speed with a single
RGB LED on it and while it spun it also cycled up and down
then you could have a full color display using a single
data pin on a uC and just one bright LED.

I bet someone mechanically inclined
could come up with a simple design.
