Hi I am getting a logic level mosfet transistor, from jameco with a full saturation at 5 volts, Why could I not hook it up directly or will I have to go through a transistor from the basic stamp to· creat a pwm output at about 5 amps..

The gate of your mosfet can be driven from the Stamp output pin. I always put a few hundred ohms (say 220) in series bewtween the Stamp and the gate.
Monitor the mosfet temperature as you get into the higher currents just to confirm you are really getting the mosfet to switch fully on.

Its also a good plan to put a 15K-22K resistor directly at the mosfet, between gate and source to ensure the transistor can't drift into partial conduction if you inadvertently make the Stamp pin an input.
