Wastebot at Last!

Per my promise in·my "Where is Everybody" post·exactly one week ago, I·worked on Wastebot this weekend and· got him·walking and videoed tonight. Definitely a cutesy entertainment robot, but very fun to drive around and watch our twins' reaction to it. They are fascinated by it and follow it; they·can crawl faster than it can walk, although·Wastebot can use Sprint mode (thunk, thunk as shown in the video) to escape from them in an emergency.

Per my Youtube comments, this is just the beginning for Wastebot!

That is so cool! I especially like the "Robby-the-robot" rotating dishes. And tri-angular wheels! Brilliant! They wind up being self-locating, and give a 'walking' effect with a circular motion. Brilliant.

Yes, I definetly see the huey duey waddle now. Adds much character. As James Lipton would say - " This is a DE-LIGHT!"

Neat. If you filmed it in black and white it could be a great special effect for a 50's sci fi movie mashup!

    Hi erco,

Beautiful work. So retro. Perhaps "Wastebot" could leave a trail of waste behind it, like Holorith cards or a punch tape tail.

Does that claw in the front work or is it just for show?

Simple one-motor gripper & lifting arm works very nicely. I need to add one more relay (surprise) to my board to make it work. Stay tuned!

Great bot erco! Wonder how "wheels" like that would do on steps?

    Hello Erco,

Great Job on the robot! That would be a fantastic robot to use for demos and I think kids would love it. The way you have it moving gives it quite a bit of character.

Glad you like it, Whit! Sorry, but Wastebot is a lowlander, it doesn't do windows or stairs. The Galileo Viper robot is a better bet for stairs: http://www.galileomobility.com/?p=358·Most good stairclimbers are similar:·low profile, low·CG robots with long tails for stability to resist flipping over backwards. But for all its sensors and technology, Asimo isn't any better than Wastebot on stairs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASoCJTYgYB0·· tongue.gif
