I know... I buy also some components from "active robot"... but when I buy from Hong Kong, I pay no more than $6 for small packets... I don't understand why Parallax is so expensive...

It's because Parallax does not just stick the stuff in an envelope and dump it in the mailbox.· They track it, which costs more,·because they know that there would be great wailing and gnashing of teeth, recriminations, and vituperations·should something or other get lost, or stolen, etc.
Maybe they could have a choice: "All bets are off.· No tears, take your lumps.· If it doesn't show up then it's strictly the customer's tough ****!"

Shipping to Canada runs all the way from 35 to (70 + random 13% duty about 60% of the time), however as mentioned above.
1) the service is excellent and personal - actually at the top of most suppliers I deal with
2) no bent pins or defective items
3) lots of foam peanuts to reuse
4) A catalog with every order
5) very fast - on-time delivery
6) Lots of exercise - delivery is usually at 1230 around here - I do a lot of running back to the office to pay duty
7) if you order from $200-$500 then shipping cost becomes miniscule.
8) indexed to the US $ - so order a lot when the dollar is down (exchange here ranged from 0.65 to 1.12)
9) And finally - the #1 reason is that when it dips below -35 C - the courier makes sure the packages (IE: LCD displays) do not freeze

Duty?!! What about NAFTA? I never pay duty for items that are shipped to the U.S. from Canada! I have all my PCBs made in Ontario, and there's never been a charge for duty. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother. (But, yes, I think there might be some paperwork involved to claim a NAFTA exemption.)
Sorry not really duty but Canadian taxes = provincial/state sales tax @ 8% and generalized sales tax (federal) @ 5%, and the future HST (harmonized sales tax - provincial) - which is what I would pay if purchased here.
Sometimes the packages are opened and inspected and charged tax - somethimes they just pass through without inspection.
I don't mind paying a lot of taxes here - as they are put to good use.

I am canadian, so "they" is really "me" and "we" since I am a shareholder in the govt. Life is very good here, the phrase "you get what you pay for" takes on a new meaning here up north.
After all income taxes 20-35% and sales taxes 13% some of us end up with around 55% of our income - not bad considering we live in a creative paradise up here in silicon valley north.
thank you

I totally agree:
Some components are available in Europe, with low shipment costs, but not all... (rather few components !)
We need a place in Europe for buying all Parallax components.
I buy some fron Spinvent in UK (but have to pay in sterling), other places in germany or belgium dont speek english
Cats92 (Paris,France)

That's meaningless short of actually just giving them money that they don't demand.·
