eTape Liquid Level Sensor-In gasoline

Hello All

I was just wondering if anyone has tried the "eTape Liquid Level Sensor" in a gas tank?
'
I know the spec sheet says water soluble but I like to flirt with disaster.

Ya I could make a hydro coupler with vinyl tubing and some glycerin.

I was just wondering if someone has already used this is gas?

Hmmmm, yes, I think it's been done before. Isn't that what the BP's guys used back before April in the Gulf of Mexico?

I thought BP was to cheap to buy the sensor from Parallax and they just decided to run in the dark and wing-it, Hopping nothing would go wrong.

I'm tired of running out of gas with my remote BS2 controlled bush-hog and having to leave the AC cooled computer room and walk way out back to refill it with gas.I have room in the BS2 for this level sensor to send a level back to the remote when the fuel is getting low.

Maybe I should stop being cheap and just order a couple and try them out for my self. In several months I should have some long term data. It would really be nice to find a forum that I could post on and see if any else as tried this before I spend all this time on such a simple project.

    $MCc%,

in all seriousness, I'd be a little concerned about the plastic dissolving, albeit very slowly, into my gasoline and eventually mucking up my engine. I think the data sheet says the etape is made from Polyethylene Terephthalate. Look that up and see if it is compatible with gasoline, just to be safe. Also a concern: I don't think Polyethylene Terephthalate does well at temperatures above 150 F, but you might look that up, too, because, as usual, I don't really know what I'm talking about here.

PhiPi has a point, too, about electricity: whatever you do, be sure you know what you're doing to prevent sparks, etc. from blowing you up.

This might sound obvious but Polyethylene Terephthalate "PET" is soda bottle plastic ..

Thanks for the feed back guys

First is the safety side of things.I have seriously looked in to this. Why its safe is way beyond this post, But it is.

Second was temperature. The gas tank is remotely mounted from the engine and its polished aluminum so the sun doesn't heat-it up.But I can see a problem with elevated temperatures and the brake-down of PET in gas. My use shouldn't see this temps, But I'll look for them just in case. Thanks

Third: I didn't catch the material spec. as " Polyethylene Terephthalate ". I've used empty plastic soda bottles for years to store gas in, even the good Sunoco stuff. Thanks

I think this will work just fine.

    Thanks for the replys

Okay, so here's the rule: you are only allowed to use Polyethylene Terephthalate if you can say "Terephthalate" without bending your wrist or swiveling your hips.
