well i think this is silly for a laptop. why do you want to see through it? What would be cool though is if they made a nice pair of sunglasses.

Actually, OLEDs would make terrible sunglasses. They're not blocking the light from being transmitted like a LCD is, instead, each element is actually producing light... so, you'd have a light source right in front of your eyes, blocking everything else because it would be blinding you! smile.gif

you would have to dim the brightness so it does not overpower. They do cut down 40% of light and tint could be added if more was wanted. my thought is sun glasses with data overlay on them. I.E. see GPS data, see your emails, and caller id.

It seems the laptop makers are veering away from "practical" towards "trendy". As another example, what's with all those glossy screens, lately? Who wants a laptop screen that that you can see reflections in?

True. I would want a laptop with a reflective display so I can see outside.

My favorite technical misuse of computer displays is Hollywood's tendency to project the screen info onto the user's face for drama. Perfectly-focused laser-like beams clearly show characters and sonar displays on the actor's faces in War Games, Crimson Tide and the like. When OLEDs can do that, please call me!

That is silly for a laptop. I think the reason they are adding flashy features is that their base products are all so similar. With netbooks pushing down prices at the low end, they need to find a reason to convince buyers to shell out for the higher margin machines.

There's also a glut of old good laptops available too. I'm using a Dell P4 laptop that I got for free. The original owner bought a new machine and the residual value wasn't worth the e-bay hassle.

I don't see any way that you could have oled data on a sunglass
lens and focus on it...it would be way too close to the eyes.

If you used a lens to allow focus on the oled glasses then the world
    beyond would be all fuzzy.

Yes, I see how a VR set would easily work.
It would have a lens system to allow the eyes to
focus on a tiny screen and deliver a clear, wide
    view.

My crystal ball foresees that in a very few years
the device now known as a cellphone will morph to
include an rf coupled add-on device that you wear
like a geeky pair of glasses. They will have two pinhole
type cameras on the front and deliver a very clear
view of the outside world to the wearer. They will also
give a VR view of an internal world that will include
the internet in 3D. This internal world will either take
full control of the view or will be able to superimpose
to selectable degrees onto the view of the outside world.

This will become the preferred way to view video and
surf the web. It will also take the place of safety glasses
and things like UV protective gear like welding helmets.
The quality of the view of the outside world could be very
impressive. The focus would be nearly perfect from a
few inches to infinity and night-vision would be possible.
You could also tweak the color spectrum for a custom
view. Pilots could use these to get real-time radar and
weather data superimposed on an enhanced view of
the outside from cameras located externally on the
surfaces of the plane. A pilot could get a generated view
of her plane from a selectable distance. You would literally
be able to see a plane below you as it maneuvered...this
could be valuable for the military. It would take a good cpu
to generate this sort of display but something with the power
of a cell processor could manage it. There are nearly endless
uses for this kind of 3D viewing appliances... they will be created.

I'd love something like this just to make it easy to drive
with the sun directly in your face... this tech would handle that.
