POT Size help

So I just purchased a Plunge Router and table for $15.00 at a garage sale. I am going to attempt my luck at making a CNC router. Here is my question: The router is AC 120 V. What size pot and resistor do I need so I can manually adjust the speed? The normal speed for this router is 20K RPM. I want to get it going manually before I turn it in to a CNC machine and need to be able to control the speed. If this is not the correct way to go about it or if there is an easier way, please feel free to tell me. Thanks in advance for any help.

Used variacs show up on Ebay occasionally. They change 120 VAC into lower AND higher voltages, very versatile. Use on motors, Jacob's ladders, everything. Every shop needs one. Maybe even two.
