Problem with electronic insolation

Hi,
I tried to open and close 110 volts valves using
a BS2-IC and mechanical relay but it was imposible.
After that I replaced the mechanical relay by the solid
state relay an I solved the problem.
But, I would like to know where was the problem.
Do you have some experience using a optocoplers chips
like the picture and / or problems with mechan. relays?
Thanks, Joe

Believe it or not, you almost·found the reason.· Broken down simply, mechanical relays can confuse the stamps when de-energizing.· The coil & plunger work together to generate a small (But annyoing) energy pulse that is dumped into your circuit.· The link's discussion will help you elimintate it.
Since the solid state relays don't generate the energy pulse, you found another way to......·"fix" the problem.

Am I correct in assuming that this image is for the unit you ended up using to make it work?· If not, then I would suspect that diode of being faulty.·
The optocoupler was an overkill for the circuit...AND.... Without the diode, the optocoupler won't protect the stamp if the relay shares a ground with the stamp. They would have to be COMPLETELY electrically seperate.

The diode attached to the left of the relay is the 1N4148
Each time the Stamp read a HIGH
the Basic Stamp-2 has a reset . As I told you , I don't have problems
with solid state relays.
I would like to build a good circuit (I am not
an expert)
Do you know where can I find a better solution ?
A diagram could help a lot.
Thanks, Joe
