Greetings All ... Does anyone have a schematic for a Sherline model 5000 milling machine, a spike on the AC line blew the top of the speed control IC and took out a capacitor of which I don't know the value of. I found the chunk of the speed control IC which is a LM324 but the cap I have no idea what it is. If push comes to shove I will trace the circuit board but that is time consuming and prone to errors and besides there maybe other damage that is not visible hence the need for the schematic.
Any help would be greatly appreciated ... thanks in advance and take care ... Vic

    Have you asked Sherline?

Hi Leon ... yes I wrote them an email but I suspect it's proprietary information and not generally disclosed to the public and besides then they wouldn't be able to sell me a new controller PCB at their overly inflated prices. Maybe I'm hasty in generalizing them but I've been on this planet a long time and nothing surprises me ... anyway thanks for the info ... take care ...Vic

I'm not an expert in these things but I would get as much information that is printed on the back of the machine.· Does it have a plate with information written on it?

What I would do is take a picture of the circuit board and upload it here with a ruler next to the hole where the capacitor is.· Someone could take an educated guess for a replacement.

If you don't find a schematic then a picture of the circuit board would be a schematic or will have to do.

Capacitors generally have one of several obvious roles to play in a circuit - oscillation, filter, decoupling, ripple removal, feedback.

The physical package and size may offer some clues to its role. From there, you might find that improving the capacitor spec will prevent another disaster.

Reading up on LM324 typical circuits might also provide a clue by which pins the capacitor is connected to.

This website looks interesting for alternative repair.

Does this look anything like your controller? Maybe you are in luck.
