5V Power for Propeller based PCBs using miniUSB connector

I am using the miniUSB-AB connector to power·my new pcb designs. Here is why...
The miniUSB-B is the standard for many phones, cameras, etc. So why the miniUSB-AB ?
So, if the pcb contains a pair of links from 2 prop pins (series resistors will probably be required) that link to this connector, then we may be able to utilise this connector for a connection to other hosts (which will then supply 5V power to our pcb). It will not work with devices unless we breakout the cable to get 5V from elsewhere, but this is still an option.
It just makes sense to me to use a miniUSB-B or miniUSB-AB for 5V power.

- brings in regulated 5V from a number of sources (many people already have them)
- mobile phone,·camera chargers (110/240V ac)
- mobile phone,·camera· chargers (12V car cigarette plugs)
- PC's via a USB connection
- Powered USB hub
- cables from miniUSB to USB are plentiful (many have them)
- miniUSB-AB is lower profile
- takes less space
The miniUSB-B is the standard for many phones, cameras, etc. So why the miniUSB-AB ?
- miniUSB-B is the standard for a device
- the AB connector allows·either A (host) & B (device)
- with the new semi-complient USB drivers·done by Micah we may be able to connect to
- PC's and other hosts
- devices such as
- USB memory sticks
- Bluetooth
- WiFi
- All we require is a cable
- I can use·the miniUSB-AB·elsewhere (I am buying in bulk)

I have a small collection of chargers that
use this type plug, I bet most people do.
Did you find a low price source for the connectors?
I've been hooked ever since I did the COBY key-chain hack to make PocketProp.
Cheers,

The miniUSB-AB is SMT but the connectors are at the rear and should be fairly easy to solder by hand with a small tip iron. I am deciding on 2 microSD connectors. One is hinged, the other is a push/push type, and both are bigger footprints than I currently use (which costs ~$2). Both can be soldered fairly easily. I am also buying an AV connector (3.5mm 4 pin version) which can be used for stereo, TV or both. It's cheaper to buy one and use it everywhere, and it's small. The VGA is my last decision. It is T/Hole but I am unsure if I have enough room to use a standard footprint or I have to use a compressed footprint. I would rather use the standard footprint. I will have some pin headers, sockets and shunts too.
Steve. I have a number of devices which can be charged/powered from a USB connector. The handheld Bluetooth I bought a while back came with a Cigarette Plug to USB socket with internal regulation. I use this a lot!

I forgot to add, I am using a USB-A (full size) for a USB Keyboard (working in PS2 mode). Not all USB Keyboard work this way, but a good number do. Once again it saves board height.

I use mini USB in my current designs for power.· The FTDI chip provides the handshaking required to do this cleanly, although I don't think this is really necessary.
I've heard that cell phone makers are switching to micro USB, so it may make sense for us to transition to that too.

If you find an exceptional buy on vga connectors please let me know.
For the record. Sapieha reminded me (I should mention it) that not all PCs and Laptops will supply enough current for some USBs. The USB protocol allows for current restriction. My main use is with the many adapters people have, such as phones and also powered USB hubs. I mentioned I have both a cigarette lighter with USB-A and a powerpack with USB-A. These are great for powering and charging various USB devices.
Holly: Yes I will be buying VGA. The microSD are like the ones you found on eBay, but I am getting from a reliable source with full specs. As soon as I place my order I will let you know as I will not require the whole 1,000 of each part!

I personally like the configuration used on the Arduino Duemilanove, which accepts power from USB or other source via a plug. It auto-selects which is used.
Another nice configuration is that on the Arduino Mini, which uses USB for power only, but has a circuit to charge a LiPo battery through the USB, or pads for soldering another source connection.
