Looking for web host recommendations

[I apologize if this is too far outside of acceptable Sandbox usage. Admins can feel free to delete this thread if they feel it's inappropriate.]

I have five websites (personal, band, wife's vet clinic, and two non-profits I work with) all at the same web hosting company. All were hacked in a relatively short time period. Seems like too much to be coincidental. The company's tech support has also been very slow to respond which makes me feel they're either swamped with people who've been hacked or the company is falling apart. So I'm looking for a new host. Must use Linux-based servers and allow shell access. None of these sites is anything approaching high-volume. I don't need anything outside what looks like the standard cPanel and fantastico services.

It's hard to know where to go on the Internet to find real web hosting reviews, so I figured I'd check with the most reliable collection of folks I know: this one. Does anyone have a web host they use and recommend?

Thanks,
-Steve

    Steve,
I have been using Powweb for 2 domains and hosting for 3 sites. Never had one single problem in 4 years. And the price has been cut in half since I joined.
It's crazy cheap with unlimited storage and·bandwidth.

Called tech support twice and got instant answers on some problems.

Send me a PM if you want to use them. I will need to set a link up at my site to get a referral fee which I can split with you.

    Jim

    They are excellent.

In the UK I'd recommend mythic-beasts.com.

Thanks for all the input. I am checking them all out. I've also asked my current host to see if they'll give me a straight answer about whether or not their servers were compromised.

I had a web site for several years and also set one up for an orchid distributor. After looking at all the options, Yahoo provided a very reasonable package and I felt very confident that hacking issues would get resolved. At the time, I got a special offer of $12.00USD/month and it included the site name registration.

The only reason I gave it up is that no one was really visiting the site. But living in Taiwan, one really has to be very careful of hacking and viruses. And I also needed someone that would handle my patronage in English. It all worked out quite well. Just about everyone that is providing these services are using Linux or Unix, but it really helps to have a big company that is really responsive to preventing attacks.
