Professional Development Board and SX Chip.

Hey guys, I just recently bought the PBD. I'm a little frustrated with how hard it it to remove and insert the BS2 ( I even broke a pin in the module but was able to fix it). I was told that the SX Chips which this supports are easier to remove ( I want to program stuff and then insert the microcontroller into a breadboard, this is why I'm interested in removing modules and what not).

Can I program and use the SX Chip without having to remove the BS2 Module? The I/O Pins are the "R" labeled ones right? Also is there any sort of manual or anything about integrating the SX Chips to this board?

Yes. From document on product page:

Q. Since the SX28AC/DP has its own socket, can I have it installed when I’m using a BASIC Stamp
or Javelin Stamp microcontroller?
A. Yes – except when using the BS2p40 which uses the SX’s RB and RC connectors for some pins.

Do I need a SX Key to program the SX Chip? Or can I do it through serial?

Mine has a place for the sx key but the documentation should tell you.

Yeah mine too, was just wondering. Also using the BS2 if I wanted to use the LCD and the 7SEGMENT at the same time, I wouldnt be able to do it due to the shortage of I/O pins?

Also, do you have any more examples or mini projects using the PDB? The ones in the manual are extremely simple and I would like to see how this board can perform with actual circuits.

Hey Jarhead, you know only a jarhead can call a jarhead a jarhead!

I recently bought the PDB and had to remove the 2p40 once and yes its not something I want to do regularly.

I have a suggestion, if you have anotther circuit that you are swapping the SX chip in and out, why not simply enable that circuit with a serial interface to the SX programming pins. I really don't know the SX chip,but it should be only 3 maybe 4 wires and a d-sub connector.

See my post from yesterday "Code for bs2p40 w/DS1307 timestamp clock w/user control". Its a fairly complex program with a simple set up on the PDB. But honestly, learning someone elses code can sometiimes be as complicated as writing your own.

Maybe you are looking for more info on the SX? This book is good. It's not available in PDF, but the code is available for free:
