PINK server and Win 7 networking issues

Apologies if this has been covered - I did a search on the stamp forums and found nothing.

Issue:· PINK Server not being seen on my Windows 7 laptop.· Can be seen just fine on my Win XP machine.·

Background:· PINK Server module has been properly configured using the IPSetup.exe program.· IP Address is set to 192.168.1.44, subnet mask 255.255.255.0.· Program sees everything properly and reports that the module is indeed successfully seen (by the IPSetup program.)· I am using the crossover cable to connect durectly to the network connection on my laptop.· Laptop is a Sony Vaio (mfg 2009) Running Windows 7, current with all Microsoft updates to date.

The network IS seen as being an "unknown network" in my Network Control Panel.· It appears when I plug the cable into the PINK, and disappears when I remove it.· When I attempt to access the server using a browser and address http://192.168.1.44/, it times out with a network connection error.· Troubleshooter reveals that the device is not configured with an IP address and is not accepting communication via the http port.

If this was just being used on my own machines, this would be fine, but they are going to be used in a place where they just upgraded to all Win 7 machines...

Any help greatly appreciated.

Dave

    Hello,

In Windows 7 Microsoft has started moving away from conventional networking and more toward something called a Home Group (Which, oddly enough only works with Windows 7). In mixing 5 Windows 7 PCs with 3 Windows XP machines at my house that the Windows 7 network settings can appear very strange to someone not familiar with them. First of all, tere are settings for network discovery, password protected sharing (which should be off) and encryption strength. If you don't have the encryption on the lower setting the older systems won't communicate with the Windows 7 PC. The password protected sharing isn't supported correctly either between the two. You really need to review these settings and then make sure you have the right IP and Subnet Mask settings on the Windows 7 machine as well. There is a spot to set the Domain or Workgroup for compatibility as well. I hope this helps. If I were home right now I would tell you my settings there. Take care.

For now I'm just going to provide a Win XP machine with the boxes for the clients... If YOU find it to be working oddly, I probably would be totally lost. Networking isn't my specialty any longer - it's changed too much! Ironic since I used to be a Network Admin (about 15 years ago, though! smile.gif )

    Thanks for the info,

    Dave

    Hello,

Must resurrect this thread, using WinXP no longer an option...

Netburner IP Setup V2.0 does NOT see the PINK Server module. I have tried the following (and then some):

1- Both regular and crossover cables tried.
2- Manually programmed IP address, subnet mask, GW & DNS, as well as tried DHCP

In all cases the IP Setup program searches unsuccessfully for any module and sees nothing.

I have no firewall or virusscan software running on this standalone setup.

    Any help... vastly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dave

    Dave,

All support has been moved over to :

    http://www.netburner.com/pink/

Hopefully, you may also get a reply here from some users.

I faced a very similar problem as you describe. I was told by Parallax that this might be solved by upgrading the PINK's firmware. I sent my Pink all the way to from Europe to California for upgrading, when it came back it could be seen by all my systems, both XP and 7. So in my case upgrading was the solution.
The firmwire was upgraded to SB70 Parallax Web server 1.35

On upgrading, take a look at this thread from about a year ago:
    http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?121844-PINK-Firmware-Released-(The-future-of-the-PINK-module)&highlight=PINK+Firmware+Released+%28The+future+PINK+module%29

I hope this will help you.

I discovered that Parallax discontinued the PINK just after I posted here... I have subsequently been in touch with Netburner and received the info on upgrading the firmware. I've d/l'd the new .s19 file, the AutoUpdater, and the new IPSetup tool... I should find out very soon!

Thanks for your confirmation and help, I'll let you all know of my findings. These things are WAY too handy to not have around in piles! :-)
