As always, very nice! I think these tutorials are answering A LOT of questions for those looking into designing their own boards. Now it shouldn't be such a daunting task.

Quiz #1 What's up with the name Gerber?

Gerber was the name of the company that created some of the first photo-lithographic equipment for circuit board manufacture. I read in wikipedia that Gerber was actually the name of the founder.

    Nick,

I knew YOU knew what is was, I was asking others if they knew what the origin of the name was, and it's not a spinoff of a baby food company :) It's a good read to understand the whole board making proccess.

I worked at Gerber and with Joe Gerber back in the 80's. That was an exciting time. We had the most accurate photoplotters in the world, and times were good...until laser plotters came out. Everybody seemed to want to get into photoplotting. The laser plotter wars were demanding. We bump up resolution, someone does a better spot definition, we do an raster aperature design package....

Well the dust has settled. You can do a PCB layout with free software ,(used to be $50,000 for a 8 layer design station), and print off a transparency on you laser printer ,(used to be $50,00 for a bottom line Photoplotter with 24 apeturer wheel, and may take 6 hours to plot).

And if you understand Gerber data, ( a subset os RS-274D), you are on you way to understanding most of CNC instructions. We incorporated linear and circular intepolation into the gerber code because we not only did photoplotting for the PC and graphic arts industry, but we did carbon fiber cutting on our modified tables, (6' x24'), and NC verification for the auto industry.

We lost a great mind in 1996 when Joe Gerber died. But the company lives on.
