I have a garmin 60csx and a nikon d200 that comunicate with each other via a nikon MC-35. The MC-35 is breaking so I would like to build a cheap wireless replacement. The MC-35 I believe is completely passive addapter and the 2 comunicate via rs232. I only need a 10 foot range since both haves will be on my body.

Any sugestions?

Xbee modules. It does all the buffering and error checking for you.

Well that makes easy but how expensive is it? Both to buy and current draw on my batteries.

1mW XBee modules that are 802.15.4 based Series 1 (which you want) cost $20 each. They run on 3.3V, so you will need a voltage source and 3.3V regulator and something to convert voltage. If you mean TTL when you say RS232, then a series resistor will probably be ok since 3.3V vs 5V isn't that big a deal, but if you are talking about true +/- 12 V RS-232, things get a bit more complicated (MAX232). Current draw is way low. Check out digi.com for spec sheets.

i am pretty sure the garmin 60CSX uses true RS232. It can be plugged directly into a pc. I will have to put my scope on it some time and verify this though.

i quickly skimmed the manual. looks like to use Xbee i need something to convert the 60CSX to a safe usable level(clamping diodes and series resisters should do), the module itself, a micro controller to set up which module should send to. a second module to receive with a second micro to setup, and hope that my camera can except a cmos signal in.
