My puppy linux startup time: 2 minutes?!?!

I have TRIED to switch to Linux, just TRIED. The only linux that I have gotten to work right on my system is Puppy linux. I have tried to use it as my OS, but it has 0 advantages. The biggest of which is the startup time. It says "5 second usual boot", then goes into a 2 minute long booting process (probably longer) that takes longer to boot then Windows XP!! I'm running it off a disk, so I may just have a slow drive, but I've booted it several times and each time it claims a faster boot, but with no avial. Any help here???

Thanks,
Micro

re:I'm running it off a disk

    CD or DVD?

The last time I used Puppy Linux I had a few problems with it.

The Linux I use the most is MEPIS It will run as a live CD

In general running off a live CD is slower than off a hard disk. With enough RAM puppy will load its entire image into memory and be faster to run, but the boot will still be slow.

The X windows server and video card drivers are the bane of Linux users. If I recall correctly Puppy can fall back to a non hardware accelerated driver which is why it is so compatible. Same is true for DSL and Knopix. You might want to find out what chipset you PC is using for video and see if it is on the compatible list. Intel and Nvidia usually are, ATI is spotty but getting better, and SiS is a basket case.

Puppy Linux is really designed for running from a flash drive. It has some quirks that make it kind of a hassle to run any other way.

I'm curious why the only Linux you've gotten to work right is Puppy. What are your computer specs?

I don't know if it will help you now but in the past I've found the machine you use to make your CD's really makes a difference. I was using an older machine to make the CD's to try out Linux myself a while back and only 1 out of the 5 or so I made worked. Then I discovered variables such as write speed/quality of the burner could make a difference so I switched to my newer computer at 8x write speed and not a single CD failed, not even the rewritable kind. So perhaps you could try something like that if you haven't already?

Puppy Linux is lean and mean and fast to boot.......after you have installed it that is. I had an old 900MHz Celeron laptop with 128M RAM that was a complete old dog with XP SP2 but with Puppy installed, well, it was young again, just like a Puppy, it just flew.

Bob mentioned Mepis which has always been one of my favorites and a good solid Linux, then I was using Ubuntu seriously as it has the most support, and now a flavor of Ubuntu called Mint which is a sheer delight to use.

So Micro, what version Puppy have you installed (I hope) and what's the platform it's running on?
