Prop I/II in QFN

I believe Chip said at UPEC that he's thinking about QFP type package only for Prop II.
Somebody from Parallax told me that the QFN package hasn't sold anywhere near as well as DIP or QFP.
So, I imagine that's the reason that Prop II won't be in QFN.
My question is this:· Why isn't the QFN Prop cheaper than DIP or QFP?
I think if it were $2 cheaper then I would use it.
Don't know what the actual cost to make different packages is, but I have to imagine that QFN is a lot cheaper than DIP or even QFP to make.
At Digikey.com, I often see that the surface mount version of chips is usually cheaper.·
So, why are the Prop chips all the same price?

You mean it's not obvious? QFN users are subsidizing DIP users. How else are we lowly DIP users going to get anywhere in this world if we aren't standing on the shoulders of giants?
