Goats at Parallax

The City of Rocklin brought in goats to keep the grass levels under control. I'm not sure how long the goats are staying here, but they're certainly a welcome addition to our office park.

You can see Parallax in the background of this photo.

Really interesting to me for some reason was that the goats came with a goat supervisor (a dog). I haven't met a dog quite like this one before - he had only one mission in mind - supervise the goats! He was particularly good at his job, too, focusing on everything outside of the fence.

That's amazing! It's the kind of thing I would have expected to see done in places like Ohio!

Win, Win.. Goats transported from field to field to keep things under control and I'm guessing sold for meat later?

I am thinking the dog believes he has everything under control ;-)· Let us know when the goats escape!

I hear they're great for keeping the grass cut around radio telescopes. They pass a lot of gas, as most ruminants do, but they don't emit very much EMI. (No spark plugs.)

Very cool. I hope they don't eat the 2 Geo-Caches that are hidden back there; I still need to find the second one!

@ElectricAye, no stare-downs with the goats.

And the dog does have everything under control, by the way.

I hope they are still there for UPEW. My Ausie Shepard/Collie mix would love to help herd those little guys up. I wonder how the supervisor would react...

Need a better picture here, but, uhhh, some of them goats look like sheep.
Any of them fainting goats? Need to make a loud noise, bull horn maybe, then their legs lock up and they fall over. Wife hates it when I do that to hers. Tractor noise works too.

You're right, RichK. I think some of them are sheep as well.

When I leave Parallax this evening I'll stop by and take a closer look, provided the goat supervisor allows access.

Goats eat poison oak, and blackberry vines, and even starthistle, I believe. People say they actually prefer them.

Yes, looks like goats and sheep. The dog, i believe, is a Great Pyrenees. They make great hearder dogs. Known as "flock gardians".

    Ken

Bar-B-Q goat isn't bad if you cook it rite. My brother in-law got my wife a billygoat as a gag gift. The little guy was really cute at first. The it grew up.It ate all the screens on the first floor of my house, ate all the lawn furniture, ate the seats off of my lawn mowers, ate the cover off of my gas grill, ate, ate, ate. His final demise was mountain climbing on the hood and roof of my new truck.

I would add some fence on the Parallax side.

I think the fence is a small price for keeping it green!

My brother has 2 German Shepherds that _constantly_ want attention. I keep telling him he needs some goats or sheep to keep them occupied.

There are companies that specialize in using goats for this type of weed/grass control...

Be careful of the male goats:

"Buck goats REEK to high heaven during the rut (breeding season - roughly August to March). They mearly stink other times of the year. A buck of coarse is a male goat which still has it's testicles.

Buck goats have a long male organ they can aim. They urinate on the back of their front legs. Sometimes they do this so much, they actually cause all the hair to fall off the back of their legs from urine burn.

Buck goats also turn their head, and urinate into their own beard, and sometimes into their own mouths. They then comb the mouth full of urine through their fur.

Doe goats think the smell of buck goats is absolute heaven. Bucks have their urine and strong stink all over themselves to try and mask the smell of any does in season."

We had one that smelled pretty bad. It was borrowed by some local teenagers and taken to a coaches house. They were easy to identify as the car could be detected in the parking lot from a ways away.

Wet male goat is much worse than wet dog... They will bring tears to your eyes.

Also they do like poison oak but the oil (Urushiol) from the plant gets on their fur and will tend to infect those with whom come in contact.

What is that fence made of? Is it painted metal or plastic coated? Is it plastic net style fencing? Doesn't appear that they have any electrified sections, just the dog to keep them in?

@Holly, behind where they are from the picture Ken took is a waterway. I think it's a creek, so they'll have plenty of water.
