Given Atmel's track record I doubt if it will be available for a year or two.

The article said available now. Clicking on the "Check Distributor Inventory" on the Atmel product pages reveal inventory at distributors.

However all the other Atmel micros I was interested in purchasing in a recent Digikey order weren't in stock and won't be for a couple months!

They mean that some of the earlier 6-pin Tiny chips are available, not those new ones.

Atmel was reportedly in the red until recently.· I know they are working at selling off one of their divisions.

If·bankruptcy ever·happens, I might get a t-shirt made that says, "How do I program that other microcontroller?" but then the art crowd might find it highly offensive.· It is only meant to be a good and fun joke but the reality is that we can't take everything for granted.

Atmel seems to be blessed with good engineering and cursed with bad management. In the worst-case scenario, I'm sure the AVRs won't disappear: the designs will simply be bought up by another foundry. (Microchip offered to buy the company out awhile back, but Atmel rejected their overtures.) Atmel's stock has yo-yo'd quite a bit, but they seem to be hanging on, albeit still in the red profit-wise.

They made a small profit in the first quarter of this year, after being in the red for several years. Microchip has always been highly profitable.

Leon, you're right about the first quarter. I was looking at the EPS(ttm) figure, which covers the previous twelve months to date and, as a result, is still negative. Hopefully, the first quarter is a harbinger of things to come. (But Microchip has been, and will continue to be, a mainstay in my retirement portfolio.)
