I am thinking about running in marathons.·
What kind of shoes are you supposed to wear?
I have a great pair of steel-toe Red Wings, maybe that'll work.

I've done a few half-marathons and I get a new pair of New Balance shoes every year...
I'd recommend going to a running store with a test track so they can see if you have over-pronation issues or not...

"Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?"
The people who have the pole position in a marathon get a half mile advantage of more because there is no one in front slowing them down at the start of the race.
I know people who walked for cancer and they tore ligaments, were sunburned·and were on crutches.
Marathons for older people is something you have to be careful with because your body doesn't recover like you did when you were younger.· Be safe and be careful and wear socks because it will be the only cushion your feet have.

... AND they ran as close to barefoot as possible. Turns out the natural landing position of the bare foot loads the leg in a very different way than as happens with shoes.
Not sure what this is doing in the Propeller forum but, anyway, if you're really serious about wanting to run, start with something shorter than a marathon and work your way up from there. Once you've done a 10K, say, you can start your marathon training regimen. This is where a good schedule comes in handy. Here is one that comes to mind. These things work, if you pick one and stick to it.

May the road rise to meet you; may the sun shine on your back.
May you create something useful, even if it's just a hack.
This thread is being moved from the Propeller Chip forum to the Sandbox.
And as a former New Balance "Fit Specialist" I say New Balance. The 760-series has been wonderful to me. I pronate as well, and that shoe provides good support while staying lightweight and cushioned.

What's the diff, kid?
Are you kidding me??· What does·this subject have to do with Propellers?· Nothing.· There's no mention of a Propeller anywhere, is there?
Of course I was going to run the marathon with a Propeller taped to the toe of my boot,·that goes without saying.
Please place this Subject back in the Propeller Forum, where it belongs.
It is sort like the difference between "free energy" and scientology. If you want to talk about free energy... you go to the sandbox.

This is the Sandbox... the difference is as real as having two noses.

Part of the usefulness and beauty of these forums is that we do not have a bunch of over zealous control freaks running around saying "this is off topic", "this isn't Parallax related, so go elsewhere", etc.
There are guidelines, and when things stray far from the subject, folks step in and either move a thread (at least two were moved today), or take other steps to get on track.
There is value to be had for all, from the nubee to the seasoned vet, in making all feel comfortable here, and not get overly chastized for using the wrong forum, or maybe a "less than perfect" subject line. The person you rant on may some day provide the spark of an idea that makes you a fortune.
Over time I've seen some valuable posts from PJ. I've also seen a more than a little bit of "noise". I'm not sure what the current games are trying to accomplish, other than possibly for the Counsel of Dispair to spread dispair.
Are there posts in the wrong forum here? Certainly. Is it a "problem"? Let's just say that if you are unhappy with how these forums are run, you need to get a reality check. My experience has seen the following:
Forums that are run so tightly that it's just about impossible for any but the "chosen few" to get a post up. Others are rejected because the user does not have enough "time" on the forum, or the "format" is unacceptable.
Forums where if you are not one of the "chosen few", you can post a question, but will be ignored, and don't you DARE post a reply to an existing post! You're an outsider!
Forums (especially those that support e-mail postings) where the subject is something like "Digest 234972", or the subject is totally unrelated to the content, because it was left in place when the user used "reply" or "forward" so they wouldn't have to find the e-mail address for a "clean" post.
So JP - How about taking a deep breath and a little chill juice?
Back "on topic": I bet you could get in the Guinness Book of World Records if you ran a full marathon in a pair of concrete or lead boots.

Running anything longer than 401-Ks, you would probably lose a toenail. Get yourself a nice pair of Crocs for a marathon.

Got 150 pounds of bot and growing.
All I have to do is ask a question and I get opinions galore from the Pragmatistas, but never a refutation.
Free energy and Scientology, free energy belongs in the sandbox, but Scientology belongs in the Propeller Forum?· What is that?
Maybe I'm having a mini-stroke or something.· Do you smell burning toast, too, John R.?· A Subject nominally about board vendors, and mostly gay banter about some lousy popcorn, and devoid of so much as a mention in passing of the Propeller, belongs in the Sandbox, not in the Propeller Forum.
Great for walking around the workplace all day...not sure
about running though. I think they make a boys model but
I have never seen them. You could google images for them.
edit:
here is a picture of a nice looking Skecher for guys....

Crocs??
Do you mean those horribly ugly plastic sandals that always manage
to pick up a pebble you can't shake out?
I said that it was like the differnence between free energy and Scientology... I know that free energy belongs in the Sandbox... but I have no clue where Scientology belongs... see the difference?

When all else fails.....procrastinate!
Marathon is an appropriate metaphor for what lies ahead for Parallax... I strongly encourage you to run down that road with them. It is the best road. It is straight. You know exactly where you are going and you will be there at the finish.
On the other hand... a man of your age has no business running, let alone running in a marathon. If you want to jog... so that the running doesn't kill you.... so that you can occasionally sprint to catch a running grandchild... that is about the extent of what is reasonable.
Handball probably kills more middle age men than cocaine does... it just doesn't happen on the court most of the time.
Everyone gets to gather around the casket saying "I don't understand it... he took such good care of himself.
You wouldn't run your 50 year old car down the road at 125 miles an hour and not expect something to break.
The body is a lot more complicated.
If you are intent on running a physical marathon... then you need to train under the guidance of a cardiologist...
On the other hand... if you were speaking in jest... and as in a metaphorical way. GO..... I've started my stopwatch.

Certainly, there are posts in the wrong forum. No question, and in a perfect world, they would all be neatly segregated.
Some of the stray posting are just plain hard to figure out. Others are a little fuzzier. Hypothetical cases in point:
* How to Ping with the Prop, but ends up really being about "can Ping listen through tissue paper". This is really a "sensor question", but is just as likely to show up in the prop forum. Certainly not "the right place", but "kind of" understandable.
* Where to get a stack of short run boards: Obviously should be in the Sandbox, but ends up in the prop forum because the original poster know there was going to be a DIP Prop or two running down the middle of board, they just neglected to say so.
* What kind of shoes to wear for a marathon: Should be on a whole 'nother forum, something like "runtilyoudrop.org", but starts in the prop forum, moves to the sandbox, and is on it's second page, with a mixture of serious suggestions, discussion of the point you were trying to make, and some tongue in cheek suggestions.
Why does all this stuff happen? Why does a discussion on boards turn to stale popcorn? Perhaps the answer to that is the greatest compliment of all to the forum community as a whole, and to Parallax for their role in hosting this environment:
People are comfortable here!
We are not just a techie forum. We are indeed, a forum community, and besides sharing our knowledge, we are comfortable sharing our lives, and small pieces of ourselves. (Even of Holly chooses to stay anonymous, she (he???) still shares that cute picture of the roller skater.)
Extending this "feeling of community further", we accept posts in the wrong place, rambling discussions, off topic threads, etc., not because "it's still better than many places", but because as a community, we've decided there is more value in keeping things friendly, and maybe a touch informal, and more value in spending our time taking in and passing on knowledge, then there is value in making things "perfect".
There is nothing to refute in your points. The refuting would be in the value, or potential loss of value, if the character of these forums would change from the "near perfect" community that it is.
Back on topic: Crocks may last a lifetime, but not if you have a bull dog...
