TCS230 Color sensor - how does it work

i have to do a project in comp eng class. i need some help. im fairly new at this stuff. im trying to make a robotic arm that sorts with color. i have a tcs230 color sensor. i read some stuff about it i dont understand. is there any more things i can read or any program that i can run that can help. please help asap
