Rotation Speed Control

I was lucky enough to get a brand new 0.75 HP, 1.15 service factor, 2 pole AC motor from a friend at work.

The good news is it was free. The bad news is that it is 1 phase. It is much more valuable to me if I can run it at full and reduced speed.

Can a single phase motor be run off a VFD?

Not easily. On very small motors, you can sometimes feed them with variable voltage (like a lamp dimmer) but at 0.75 HP it probably won't be very satisfactory.

If you've already got a VFD, go to a motor repair shop and see if they'd exchange the 1 phase motor for a 3 phase that will run on your VFD.

    Cheers,

    Thanks for the fast reply.

I actually don't have the VFD yet. I kind of remember someone on these boards using a propeller and IGBTs for 3 phase motor control though..

    Good idea on exchanging it

You can vary the speed to some extent by varying the number of full AC cycles going to the motor in a period of time. Using a counter chip like the '4017 you can have power applied for x/10 cycles, where x varies from 1-10. A micro could also be used to provide any ratio desired.
