UPEW 2010 Carpool San Francisco Airport to/from Parallax

Hi All;

My plan to attend UPEW is to fly to San Francisco and rent a car (or catch a ride) on Friday Jun 25 to drive to Parallax/Staybridge hotel. My flight arrives at 1:00 PM.

Then return to San Francisco sometime on Sunday afternoon or evening, and I will overnight somewhere close to the airport·to taxi there on Monday morning for·my flight home.

I'm hoping to find someone·willing to mesh with my·schedule so that the driving portion can be shared.

Thanks and Cheers,

Peter·(pjv)

    Hi Peter (and all others):

    I am arriving at SFO on Thursday 6/24 at 2:23 and heading to Staybridge in Rocklin on 6/24 for the 6/25 Propeller course (the day before the Expo). Like Peter, I am heading back to SF on Sunday afternoon or evening. I would also like to arrange to share the driving part. Peter - it looks like we match on the return trip from Rocklin to SF, but not SF to Rocklin :(.

    Hey guys,

    We also have a train that you can ride between SFO and Rocklin:

    http://www.capitolcorridor.org/

    Note that the train is in the East Bay, and SFO is on the peninsula. So, to get to the train you ride BART:

    http://www.bart.gov/

    from SFO to the San Francisco TransBay terminal. Last time I checked you hop on a bus to get across the Bay Bridge and they drop you off in Emeryville, where you board the train.

    The portion from Sacramento to Rocklin could be on a bus if I'm not mistaken - check the schedule.

    So, it's like this to get to Rocklin on public transit from SFO:

    airplane to SFO => BART to San Francisco => bus across the Bay Bridge to Emeryville => train to Sacramento => and maybe the same train to Rocklin, or a bus to Rocklin

    Sounds pretty miserable, but it's a connected set of schedules.

    If you can get to Rocklin we can also pick you up.

    Hi Lev and Ken

    @Lev Well, sounds like part of it is a fit, so thanks for that.... will have to hunt some more for a connection to Rocklin; it's still early, but I wanted to get the ball rolling.

    @Ken, I expect to have two suitcases, and perhaps two carry ons for my presentation, and that does not bode well for train travel. If I can't get a connection to Rocklin, then I'll rent a car.

    Cheers,

    Peter

    Ken:

    Thanks for the tips. I checked the Amtrak and bus schedules and you are right - they are well coordinated. Getting to Rocklin looks easy.

    I think the San Francisco light rail BART train connects directly to AMTRAK at the BART Richmond station, so that would be an alternative to switching to a bus in downtown San Francisco and taking a bus to Emeryville.

    You might have to change BART lines at one point, but that would probably be a lot easier and faster than transferring to the bus.

    I've taken BART from SFO a number of times, and have taken AMTRAK to Sacramento a few times, but I've never made that particular transfer, so check the respective websites to confirm that before making your trip plans.

    Hi All UPEW Attendees;

    Are there any possibilities out there? I would REALLY dislike to drive the SF freeways without a navigator; even WITH a GPS!

    If anyone matches up with my schedule, please post a note..... time is ticking and I would like to finalize my travel plans.

    Cheers,

    Peter, I wish I could commit to help. However, my kids are also interested in this trip and I won't have room for anyone else.

    Silly question... Why didn't you fly into Sacramento? (SMF)

    Thanks for the thought, Steve

    Jeff when I booked my flight quite a while back, I got a $79 sale from Canada.... an incredible value, however it only flies to SFO. So, landing early enough in the afternoon, I thought it would be easy to connect with someone, and just drive the rest of the way. Now that I'm committed, I'm not sure that was good planning as I seem to be coming up empty.

    Cheers,

    Well, you're in luck. There is a birthday party Friday that appears to be more important than being with Dad.
    PM me and we can share phone numbers. I assume you'll be arriving in the international terminal at SFO.

    Cheers,

    I also planned to drive from SFO Friday, but my flight doesn't arrive until 7 PM (which is like 10 PM to me).
    So, I've changed everything around so that I'll drive from SFO to Rocklin at 6 AM and then drive back to SFO in the evening.
    That also saves me from an early morning drive to catch my flight back home.

    Anyway, if anybody wants a free ride from SFO and back leaving at 6 AM, send me a PM.

    All,

    I am arriving SFO 5:45PM Friday and have a rental car.
    I would be glad to give a ride to Rocklin to anyone who needs it Friday evening.

    As always, tape copy of the attached image somewhere on your luggage or automotive window so others can spot you easily.

    Hi Rayman and Jeff;

    Thanks for the comments.

    My ride is now arranged by a kind soul, so now that everything is ligning up, I'm getting excited to go.

    Unfortunately my small tabletop CNC machine is nowhere near ready.... only the table axis is in quasi-moving state. The gantry and its attachments is still missing, but perhaps I will drag it along anyway. Not too impressive just one axis running, but at least it would get the idea across.

    Cheers,

    Peter (pjv)
