Forum Migration Status

Ken or Jim,

Could we get an update on the forum migration status.

We all want it right, and what we have works well enough, but we've all been teased with the first preview, and at least some of us are looking forward to the new digs.

I guess what I'm saying, is we're (or at least I) are not trying to rush, just curious how things are going.

Jim took a needed break for a trip last week but he's back at Parallax now.

He has finished sorting out the login authentication issue that uses the e-mail address/password so that screen names can be used.

When we talked on Monday he had some general housekeeping to do (renew some internet service agreements) but then he was turning back to finish vBulletin.

I participate in another vBulletin forum and enjoy the forum tool a whole lot more than this one.

    Cool Beans!

Maybe a roll out announcement at UPEC? Or is that a little ambitious yet?

The new site is going to run a test data migration later this evening. If that goes well, we will finish the preparations and go for a full cut-over tomorrow afternoon.

New user registration has been disabled in preparation for the migration. All of the forums will change to read-only mode right before the threads and posts are copied to the new server. This would be a good opportunity to finish up any loose threads. Sorry, I couldn't avoid the pun.

I'm slightly annoyed because all the formatting in the transferred posts is broken. Probably too late now ... just thought I mentioned it.

Yes there are some issues with post formatting. We are going to take another pass at correcting the most obvious errors in the next couple of weeks.

Will our personal mail survive the changeover?

If not I need to copy some of mine before they go poof....

Unfortunately, the current store of private messages are not going to be moved to the new site. This site will remain available until the end of 2010, so you will have plenty of time to store the private messages from this site.

I have noticed all the links within the threads to other threads are now broken. Will there be any way to fix this ???

A good improvement! But why no Avatars?

The new forum is cool. Of course 'cool' can be interpreted in more than one way. I will miss some of the avatars.

My bookmark of the old forum address no longer works. I have a pm I need to read at the old site. Can you post the address?

Yeah, I miss the avatars, too. Are they gone forever? Without them, the landscape seems a little sterile to me.

The conversion utility provided by vBulletin did not support moving the avatars. The old site will be available later this morning. You can retreive your avatar from there and bring it over here.

Dudes! If the worst problem we have is PMs and Avatars, I think you would all have to agree that we're in pretty good shape. Eh??

How about if we give Jim a chance to take care of a few more serious issues he might have going on, and enjoy the new forums, and all they have to offer - including a functioning search!

Let's focus on the "value added" for a bit before we start worrying about the trivial.

(like hopefully having a way to fix the inter-forum links...)

I know for a fact that Jim's work on this is not done yet, so let's give him a chance to do his thing!

So far the new forums look good. Is there a timeout setting for the login? It seems that I have to keep logging in and I've already done so several times this morning. In the old forum software I could usually stay in the whole day without having to log in again.

The old Parallax Forums will be back online later this morning. I will post the new location as soon as it is available.

Is there a way to go to last read post in a thread? I could not find it in FAQ.

The old system used a cookie to keep the session logged in for something like 18 hours. I'm sure the new site has a similar setting - somewhere. I'll add this to my to-do list after the post-migration rush is over.

You can jump directly to the last post of a thread by clicking the little arrow on the thread list page (see attached image).

When you do the login there is a "Remember Me" check box. I'm not sure how long it's good for, but it works, at least for "some time". Before I checked it, I had to re-login several times, once I saw it, and remembered to check it, I was "good to go".

the option to upload avatars seems to be turned off as well. No hurry. Good work.
