Removing the Retaining Rings from Parallax 7.2V Motor Wheels?

I'm getting very frustrated - I have no idea how to get these off

The instructions indicate:

Install a wheel onto each hub. While wearing safety glasses, use snap ring pliers to install a retaining ring around the groove in the outer part of each hub.

Do I have to purchase a set of snap ring pliers or is there a safe, alternative method to get them removed?

Thanks

I wasn't able to find the Klein snap ring pliers so I got these - they work very well

I also picked up a stripper

But please don't tell my wife

Well, at least you didn't pick up one of these, else you might have some 'splainin' to do. smile.gif

I got both of these tools at Home Depot

The wire strippers will come in very handy this week as our class is building Propeller kits from Brian Riley. I also obtained wire for our school project yesterday from Radio Shack. Now, if the IT dept would just install Spin tool - I'm not allowed to touch the computers in my classroom.

Phil, I could use a system like that in my storage shed - after renaming it, of course. tongue.gif

    @Scope - thanks.

@Phil - I wouldn't get the chance to "splain" - I'd be hanging on it.

I did make a video of installing and removing the rings using a small pair of needle nosed pliers. Once you have the hang of it, it isn't bad at all. I make it look really easy in the video though. I will try to post the video tonight on my YouTube channel. I apologize for not doing that sooner. The frustration with snap rings is the reason I shot the video in the first place.

Phil, yes that or when using the needle-nosed pliers having it just about off...and then it snaps back in place. Safety glasses are always recommended when putting these things on or taking them off...right tool or not. I will definitely get that video posted though.

Just go to your local Harbor Freight tool store you can get a whole set for a few bucks.

I've also seen them in the clearence bin at Ace Hardware.

You better off using the right tool or you will be looking for the snap ring when it flies off.

Snap rings are the kind of thing where need a couple extra hands, including one to hold a smaller dowel up against the end of the shaft so that when the snap ring "snaps off", it doesn't go flying to the place of the missing socks, but stays on the dowel. If you have an "innie" belly button, you have an advantage if you can get the shaft pointed right at about waist height.

Don't try and use a finger in place of a dowel or rod. It hurts like heck, and could do some real harm under the right circumstances.

Snap ring pliers work wonders, in that you are "squeezing" the pliers to open the ring, not trying to spread the handles of a needle nose pliers.

They also make the "inside out" version for internal snap rings.

Some of the snap ring pliers kits use replaceable pins that are clamped in place. Some of these clamping mechanisms are better than others. Just something to watch for.

And remember, of all the organs you would miss, the eyeballs are probly at the top of the list. (Yes, even higher on the list than "the boys".)

The other way to get them off, at least if you are not worried about re-using the rings, is with a Dremmel tool smile.gif
