Just got a Boe-Bot!

And so far I love it. I've been doing every activity in "Robotics with the Boe-Bot" and now I'm stuck. I cannot get the piezo speaker to work. I have the wiring exactly as it is in the wiring diagram. I re did the wiring after the speaker would not sound. I'm eager to continue on in the book but I really want everything to work as the book shows. I was curious as to if anyone has any suggestions on what to do. Thank you ahead of time.

It should work as described in the book. As with anything that "should work", check your wiring, check the code that you've entered, and check it all again. Check your batteries, etc. If you've done all that and it still doesn't work, call Parallax Tech Support.

Mike is giving you good advice!

Regarding "check your wiring" -- It is really easy to get the piezo plugged in backwards, since it is round, and it is even easier to put the jumper wires in the wrong row, since you can't see the piezo's leads when it is plugged into the breadboard. Try pulling the piezo out partway and peeking underneath to make sure its leads are not in the same row. Also check that the jumper wires are each in the same row as the lead they need to connect to. I'm often off by a row when I do this.· Then, make sure that the piezo is jumpered to P4, the 5th socket from the bottom, since it is really easy to be off by one socket there too (again this is from experience!)

Defective piezospeakers are rare, but possible. You can contact Parallax Tech Support several ways, listed here: http://www.parallax.com/tabid/381/Default.aspx

Thanks Mike and Steph. It works now. I was off by a row each on the breadboard. Thanks again!

That is good advice. Probably 99% of problems I have had with projects have been human error either with programming or getting the jumper wire "one row off" on my breadboard.

Congrats on your BOE-BOT. It is a great platform to learn some robotics.

justinboyle, I was so inexperienced with robotics when I started that I thought the breadboard columns and rows were connected to the power terminals and i/o pin access

Now, I sometimes read the instructions - so much easier, more productive

I really love my Boe-Bot - it's used and has seen some abuse (like the time I thought it knew how to avoid steps - oops, more tweaking) but it keeps on working great
