Hey $WMc%,

That makes two of us who are very interested. The complexity of this particular effort has been high, in an effort to make the user experience simple and positive.

Kevin has been working on this project exclusively for a year now and we're nearing final prototypes. I'll ask him to reply to this thread.

    Hey Guys,

We can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Right now I am working on the computer GUI, which provides simple and easy communication with the module. After that there are a couple features to wrap up on the module, then it's on to FCC certification, manufacturing, and final documentation.

I'll try to get a demo video out to y'all soon to show off the module. (If Ken will let me... smilewinkgrin.gif )

I asked Kevin to skip the video and focus on completion, in keeping with John R's input.

Kevin produces very complete, professional designs when he's working without interruption.

Thanks for the guest visit to our forums, Kevster!

    Ken

I think putting Kevin on an IV drip of strong coffee and Mountain Dew will increase his productivity. That along with an 18hr a day work schedule should bring this to market a lot faster.

    @ mctrivia:

Price: Enough to cover costs, and a small to moderate profit.

Pin Out: It's wireless (i.e. WiFi). There are no pins smile.gif

[pre-emptive edit] It will be ready when it's ready, and not before.

    @$WMc%:

The whole coffee/MD thing only works for short bursts, not the long haul. Note the phrase "when he's working without interruption" in Ken's comment. Just send Keven back to his cave/lab/office/cube/work area (whatever he chooses to call it), and let him be.

Ken has also learned the value of making sure Parallax employees have a life outside of work, as this keeps them refreshed, happy, and productive. Those 18 hour days, like caffeine, only work for so long.

Then again, at the "day job", we make stainless tanks and related items. Some of our tanks for a pharmaceutical company are the final collection point of the amphetamine production line, catching the pills after they were complete, but before packaging. These tanks are about 30 gallons.

We got the tanks back to be re-worked. The pills were put into, and gotten out of, the tank via small tubes. There was also a larger inspection/clean out port. We had to make this port smaller. The original size was big enough that people could fit their hand in.

While this may have helped production rates, there were safety issues...

There has to be pins unless it is a solar powered repeater. Otherwise it won't do anything.

I think you should let Kevin strut his stuff. A year is a long time on one project. Kevin has not received one attaboy from the forums.

A Little forum exercise would do Kevin some good, Could You imagine being glued to something for a year.

One interesting thing at ESC West last week was a WiFi module from RFM. What caught my attention was that it was running on 2 AA batteries, with a sleep current of <10 µA and low duty cycle 200mA active to send environmental data, for a projected life of over a year. It uses UDP/IP for the data, the only option as far as I can tell. It pings the router at one minute intervals to keep the connection alive (to avoid time-consuming renegotiation). In addition to a few on-board analog and digital i/o, it has a serial port to accept data and can stream it at up to 2 Mb/s.

Kevin is in a meeting at this moment doing a demo of the WiFi module with our education team, engineering, and marketing. He's got our support and he knows that all of you are encouraging him to wrap it up.

Kevin would probably like nothing more than to prepare a video for you. I've not told him "no" except to the extent that I expressed some importance over the schedule since May/June are a busy time around here (i.e. new equipment is put on-line at the end of our fiscal year; inventory transactions - new part numbers, new stock - freezes for at least a week while we do an inventory count; manufacturing areas are cleaned up; UPEW brings 200 customers to Parallax). In other words, he really does need to get a few things accomplished now so he can have a break in June. It becomes difficult to get much done around here in June. And he wants to focus on the project.

Let me offer a couple of parallel scenarios to give some creed to Kevin's focus. Keep in mind Kevin (or Kevster, as we call him) knows how to have fun. He can play the piano with his feet and has a taste for characterizing the best beer. He keeps the work-life balance in order.

Andy disappeared for the last month to work on his PropScope book (a replacement for Understanding Signals). We had no expectations for any regular office work (forums, e-mail, educational customer support) and this isolation and support really let him focus on the book. He was so inspired he produced an awesome set of educational projects (400 pages) that let you jump in at various levels. I had my first tour of his work on Friday and I must say "wow, I'm really impressed. Parallax and the customers will be so thankful of what he's done and we're all fortunate to have his skills, interests and enthusiasm".

Chip designs chips. I've worked with Chip for 40 years and his major efforts are the result of intense periods of work. When he was a kid (7-8) he carried around this little blue book of physics problems and he'd solve them on the way to family events, living in his own world while all kinds of things would happen around him. The BASIC Stamps were produced in two-year periods of productivity while he was sequestered in Scandinavia. The SX-Key required at least two years and weekend-turn prototypes. And the Propeller chip was seven solid years of work. These projects were made possible by supporting Chip with solid periods of uninterrupted time blocks.

So, Kevster will arrive on the scene with real details soon enough. He hears your support and appreciates it. I also want him to share (and to take a vacation). Almost there. . .

You got it $WMc%. Only problem I see is that your Dukes of Hazard car will have to stay within reach of a wireless access point. Could be a problem with autonomous control.

You'll be the first to get one of these.

I'll have to underline how important uninterrupted focus is to completing a project. I've had to put otherwise important projects on hold and out of mind completely, just so I could concentrate on project numero uno. Sometimes I let email stack up and won't even answer the phone, if there's a project I'm concentrating on. As a Parallax-affiliated non-employee, I only wish Hallmark had a sympathy card I could send Kevin for the meetings he has to attend!
