Eagle CAD question

Hi Everyone,

I am about to start designing my first SMT PCB in eagle cad and have no idea what components to use.
It will be propogated by the PCB fabricators so I won't need to order them. smile.gif

The thing I need to know is, what components does everyone else use?
e.g. R-US_M0805, C-USC0805K, etc.

I need to know:

Resistors (1/2W)
Capacitors (10nf - 10uf) (12v max)
Regulators (5v, 3.3v)
Anything else you comonly use with the propeller.

Thank you smile.gif

Which component depends what fits and is economical. Resister I use all 0603 unless they need to be more then 1/10w if more and I don't have in stock I try to find parts less then $0.002

    McTrivia,

Since it is you that I will be getting to convert the Schematic into PCB, I may need you to check resistor package sizes as you go, just to make sure they won't explode when powered on. turn.gif

But for the moment I will make them all 0603.

Caps up to 0.1uf 0603 is usually best but voltage and higer capacitance some times push me up to 0805 of 1208

Everything will be between 12v and 3.3v. Most of the caps are filter caps for the power source to prop, eeprom, etc.
Most of the resistors are for LEDs, Pull-Ups, etc.

For any 10uf bulk caps use 0805 the rest 0603

Regulators I usually use switching for primary. I can give you a drawing for a 3.3v linearthat I am planning to use.

I think this would be a great project·(the instructions on how to·design a board for the prop using Eagle Cad)·to have uploaded to the board as a .pdf which would save everyone a lot of trouble.·

When designing the PCB keep in mind who will be making it and what your skill set is. For instance, I don't have anything against 0603 and I have used them in designs, but if your circuit board only has a handful of these devices and your board is bigger than a stick of gum, then why use such a small, small, small device? I mean, think abotu assembling and servicing. Smaller components are more difficult. I worked with a client to manufacture a PCB assembly in out of a shop in Shanghai. The PCB was designed with 0201 components. The board was 3" by 4" and the 60% of the board was empty! The fab shop laughed at the ridiculous design because of the added cost in production for such a small component (we had to add additional checks and inspection and loss/reject factors.) Since the first couple runs the client has redesigned the board and production is much easier now and less costly.

Yes anything under 0603 you will end up paying extra for assembly. 0603 is easy to hand assemble and are big enough for pick and place machine to place with almost 0% toomstoned

Bigest cost saver(at least from me) is keeping all parts on 1 side. Saves buying second stencil, saves labour, and saves energy for having to put through the oven a second time.
