I like the switching regulators. I'm a big fan of the Simple Switchers, and I see these latest ones have the inductor in the package. Neat.

    Drac,

I've a project in the works that'll require four voltages (+/-15, +12, +5) and it looks like these "new" simple switchers might fill the bill. Most of my power supply building has been done with linear regulators, so this will be a major change for me.

    Should be interesting,

I 'switched' over to simple switchers about a year ago and have never looked back. The hardest part is getting the right inductors - they need to be rated for the current draw eg 1 amp. I ended up finding a whole lot for $2 each and they are about the size of a TO220 regulator. I've been getting the simple switchers from Futurlec but lots of suppliers have them. I think they end up cheaper - you save lots of board space as no heatsinking is needed and no big (and mechanically wobbly) external heatsink either. Do you have a price on these new ones?

...well, took a quick look at DigiKey and there were a number of 500mA switchers priced in the range of 1$ - 5$. Going to 1A and above, the priced jumped toward $10. The LMZ10503 noted in the newsletter was toward $10 as it's a 3A device.

What I don't see (after the quick look, granted) were units that produced negative voltages, and that'll be critical should I not go the "old fashioned" route.

yes www.futurlec.com/ICLinearRegulators.shtml negative ones do seem harder to find. Might need some more research.
