Robogames 2010

I was able to go to Robogames this year and enter to Propeller driven robots. One, The Peanut Tin of Terror, won second place in the autonomous combat 3lb division. The other, Sterylite 6000, won second place in the walker challenge. Peanut uses a propeller robotics card and Streylite 6000 uses a SpinStudio card.

I am not the greatest robot builder but I think the Prop chip really helped, particularly in combat where you have to read sensors in real time. It was very fun to participate in Robogames and meet other robot builders.

I agree with Whit+, "Congrats on your winnings" Was there MechWars going on this year? I have been out of touch with that game which started for the first time last year..

Mechwars seems to be one of the most popular and fastest growing events at the show. They had a much more elaborate arena and some very cool robots competing. I am sure there will be posts and pictures up, you should try to find them.

That is an event I would really like to do next year. In a way it seems kind of silly, because it really is like trying to recreate a video game. But then it looks like fun and I know my son / nephew would enjoy it.

You know I actually worked on the videogame Mechwarrior 2 at Activision, back in the day.

Thanks I'll need to check out Torrsons web site to get some video and photos for the MechWars. I have been designing a Mech for some time but the servos I need are $150 USD each and then I need 18 of them. OUCH!!! I have been looking for a sponsor but I have had no luck with it yet. My Mech that is in the design work has a Gatling gun on it and this is almost completed. When I have it working I'll post it in the completed projects. The gun will be controlled by a BS2 or I may use the BS2px for the speed of reading the barrel locations and triggering the guns motor.

What kind of servos are you thinking about using? Are you thinking about a biped or hexapod? With 18 servos I assume it will not be a quad. It is really good to ask other people making robots about servos because many servos do not preform quite as advertised. Just a suggestion, especially if this will be your first walking robot.

With walking robots it can be good to start small and work your way up. You can usually reuse the expensive component-- the servos. For example, you could try a twelve servo hexapod first. Or even an eight servo quad.

The Mech I'm designing and building is a Tri-Pod walker. I love a huge challenge and this one will really show my skills in designing and programming. Below is a picture of what I'm making and yes it will have the rocket launchers on it.

This is not my first walking robot that I have made or made mods for just to let you know, I am well seasoned in robotics. Even though I do not post a lot of my bots, I will post the Gatling Gun once it's done via YouTube. I may also post the complete how-to and source code to operate it. It should be done in another 3 weeks or so. BTW thanks for the suggestion of asking others for their advise but I have already done that in other forums. And man this Mech is going to be hard to build but most of the design has already been done.

That will be so cool! They have a rule where if you have 4 legs you have four target sensors, two legs two sensors. You could be the first with three legs / three sensors. I think that would really make a splash at MechWars. Good luck and please post pictures!

As the Mech comes alive I'll start posting pics. I may build a micro version first because the cost would be under $100 USD but this would not have the guns in place just the walking and video camera would be installed. Plus this would give me a better chance to get the walking and CG of the unit down correct. When it comes down to the larger Mech I have a buddy in NZ that will make the armor in carbon fiber for a stronger and light weight Mech so that the weight of the whole Mech is not too bad plus it will protect the electronics as well.
