A SX/B tutorial on how to use the MAX7219 to control 7 segment displays.·
The advantage is that it only utilizes 3 pins on your MCU, uses a simple serial protocol and you can control up to eight digits or 64 LED segments.· The MAX7219 can also be used to switch 5vdc·500ma loads, more·than a typical MCU can handle (which is about 20ma)
The disadvantage is that the chip costs $8.00.·
