I was able to score a Scribbler off·the Parallax auction on·ebay last night. Now I can·join in the fun!

I hope it plays well with my Toddlers.

Sorry if I outbid any members here.··turn.gif

EDIT: There also a brand new Toddler on ebay:

    Thanks Whit. I am humbled to join the great ranks of you and erco, and all the other great people in this great robotic forum.

    I got outbid on a Hero JR, so I had to settle for the Scribbler.

    When I read the title "New Scribbler Owner" I thought you were the owner of the "new" scribbler ( S2).

    I'm still laughing at myself.

    Have fun with your new toy.

    Your new Scribbler is a rare robot at this point.

    S2 is proceeding nicely. What started as a discussion about whether to order another production run of Scribblers ended eight hours later with a whole new conceptual design known as the S2. This was almost a year ago, and now we've completed prototypes. We're just about headed for production. The current schedule calls for our first run to be done in August, but I imagine it'll be a few weeks beyond that schedule. Parallax has a significant commitment in the S2 design. S2 has only been possible because of a skilled and motivated team: Parallax, Element, and Bueno Systems.

    I hope you like this robot as much as we do. Some of the improvements are really amazing, too, not to mention new features.

    Mikerocontroller has a more expensive stable of pets than all of us. Could be difficult to keep him satisfied with an S2 - maybe Parallax should sponsor an F1 racer?

    erco, you got it, bro. . .but one problem - and you'll already understand this from your real profession - there aren't really betas. A robot produced in volume like the S2 will have a minimum production run of 5,000 units. The factory sets up a big production line, and Parallax only receives the first production articles while the line is held up. We have a week to give the final go-ahead, and then we wait eight weeks for the production volumes. This way they don't have to setup a production line twice.

    What this means for the design team is that it better be correct in all ways. The prototype process can be a tricky one in this case, but we're getting through it. You can take a guess at how much the inventory costs if we buy 5,000 units, not to mention the NRE investment. By the time S2s arrive at Paralllax there's *well* over a quarter million USD in the product. The stakes for a 100% correct design are incredibly high, comparable only to first-run production of Propeller chips.

    That's why I referenced the importance of the design team. To design and manufacture a product with this model is totally different than making a small run of PCBs and putting them on our SMT line.

    @Ken,

    You aee a master at getting us stirred up! Phil dropped some hints the other day too - It sounds great. I know a bunch of kids (and adults) that are going to have to have one.

    Speaking of the old blue Scribbler - when I finish my robotics camps for this year (using the original Scribbler) - Ihave asked to be paid partly in Scribblers (from the schools leftover stock)! I may even leave one shrink wrapped.

    @Mikerocontroller,

    That orangutan gets around!

    There is another HERO Jr up on ebay now:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140401317632&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

    If you do pickup any of the HERO robots (1, Jr, 2000, or Arm trainer) let me know. I've worked with the HERO robots for years and know them inside and out down to every last bolt. I have the remaining inventory of HERO parts and the rights to the line. For years I've been providing spare parts, upgrades, and documentation for these robots and can help with repairs. For fixing them I have many original test fixtures and new tools that I've created for helping with repairs. If you see the article I wrote on the early robots in the #19 issue of Make there is a picture of all the HERO robots and another image that shows some of the parts for them.

    @Robert,

    Did you see this one - http://cgi.ebay.com/Heathkit-HERO-1-Robot-Kit-/330425418353?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item4ceee3c271 - Still mostly unassembled and in the original boxes. Too expensive?

    EDIT: They are never around when I have the money, and they show up when times are bad. Been trying for 10 years to get a Hero or Hero 2000. Guess I just look at them in my Heathkit Catalogs. :)

    I'm tempted to get another one - certainly one of my favorite bots ever.
