I need 64kx8 EEPROMS, is there any real difference between the AMTEL and the Microchip versions ??

And where would be the best place / best price to get 5 or so?

For the 64K versions, I don't think there's any significant differences between Atmel and Microchip. For the larger ones, the two manufacturers have different addressing schemes for some of their models. I think Microchip has one model that's compatible with the Atmel 128K chip, but you'll have to check the datasheets for that.

For prices, check the various distributors (DigiKey, Mouser, Jameco, Futurlec). You may find one with better prices. You can always try E-Bay, but you're on your own there. Sometimes you get a reputable supplier and sometimes you don't.

I recently got some from Avnet Express. Their code is
    AT24C512B-PU
    EEPROM Serial-2Wire 512K-Bit 64K x 8 2.5V/3.3V 8-Pin PDIP AT24C512B-PU
    ECCN
    Atmel
    $0.8360
    772 Stock

But really for 5 off its all going to come down to shipping

As someone else recently pointed out, use www.findchips.com/avail

There is also a Catalyst part that is sometimes cheaper. CAT24C512 I think

I always use the microchip ones. I don't know if there is some difference, but i like the microchip ones. And yes, Mouser is the best place to get them.

If you're in Canada, try Future Electronics: www.futureelectronics.com/en/Pages/index.aspx?Language=en-CA

Try the companies below. I have purchased from all 3 with no problems. Active Tech may have a local outlet if you are in a major city.
