USB adapter for serial BOE?

The situation is this: I want to give a serial BOE to a bright, young relative. His computer is new enough that he has no serial port. So I started looking at USB -> serial adapters. (RANT: I really wish there was a "standard" for the name of those things!) From the reviews, performance/operation seems to be hit or miss.
The questions·are this: Has anyone successfully gone down that path? Which adapter/converter/bridge are you using?

Pretty much any FTDI chip based adapter will work. Keyspan's High Speed Serial Adapter works. Personally, I either use Parallax's adapter or one of the ones directly from FTDI.

Personally, I have great difficulty using the search engine here. Before posting I searched for "USB adapter", "USB converter", "Serial adapter", "Serial converter", "USB serial", ad nauseum... Each search·yielded in the same, unrelated result - one page - so it wasn't hard to evaluate.
What's more, I searched the store the other day for the "Piezo Film Vibra Tab Mass" (what a name!). I didn't find it until I searched only for the term "piezo." Go figure.
Sometimes it just feels like I'm holding my mouth wrong.

I think I'll stay with the Parallax since the odds are good that it will work universally.

Get the Parallax USB to serial adapter is my advice. It works and you can't beat the price.
