Prop to Prop Communications Bus

I know Prop->prop communication has been discussed in numerous threads, but I was wondering if any of those came up with a prop communication bus?
I guess it doesn't have to be prop specific, but I would like something like CAN bus. I would really like if I had an obex object that implemented such a bus with simple commands such as transmit and maybe a message based receive handler. OFcourse minimal external components.
Do any of the i2c bus objects allow for this? I haven't really looked into i2c very closely.
The application is home automation. I would like to be able to make a bunch of small 'gadgets' and have them all communicate to each other. A single master bus would probably work fine for this, but in truth I would rather have a masterless one.
Can the CAN bus be implemented in software on the prop?
