Laser Range Project

Hello All,

I have been searching google and this forum for a simple laser range finder but I have not had any luck so far. I am looking for something that does not have to have the greatest range (up to 50feet or so) and I need to control it with either a prop or basic stamp. The project involves gathering distances (1" to 50') and using the Ping is not going to work with the distances that I need.
If there is a better suggestion instead of using a laser system please feel free to share it.

Thanks,
Jesse

    Hi Jesse,

I've also been searching but haven't come across anything yet. What I really want is just the optical part of a laser "disto" ($150ish for a complete disto at hardware stores)

Maxbotix have some great long range ultrasonic sensors which might do what you need, depending of the size of the target you're trying to detect.

    cheers

Didn't I read that Parallax/Phi_Pi are R&D'ing something along these lines?

Like a wiseguy, I figure: buy one of these at the hardware store and intercept the data that goes to the display and latch/sample it.· Easier said than done.· Somebody should buy me a few of these and maybe we can find out how.

I think it was Joe Grand that was working on a laser rangefinder - using Phil's linescan sensor.

You are correct. Here's the link with some experimental results on p2 of the thread.

The TSL1401 has a wide field of view, it'd need some kind of zoom lens for 50'

'Twasn't me. See this thread: http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=867953. The laser rangefinder product and my TSL1401 rangefider project are distinct from one another.

Darn, I was hoping that my search criteria was not good enough. Well I appreciate the answers although I do not like them, maybe Parallax could get on this:)
I need a pretty accurate range finder that I do not think a sonar range finder can get me because of the pin point accuracy that I am looking for.
    Thanks,
    Jesse

    1" to 50' is about 35' of no-man's land.
    What resolution?

I was hoping to do some mapping with the laser range finder but I am finding out that it will not work at my price point. I did find another solution that I think will work out perfectly from the following website. en.myinventions.pl/index.php?page=3Dscanner

I do appreciate everyones help and when I get this project going I will be sure to post it up here.

    Thanks,
    Jesse
