Anyone use Dynamic DNS ?

You may have noticed that www.propbasic.com and my other web sites have been down lately.

I had a static IP address with my ISP. But they have switch carriers and now I can no longer get one.
They have suggested using Dynamic DNS and that I should be able to find a provider for free.

I've done some searching, but I'd like to know if anyone here uses this ? And who you use for the service ? And if they charge a fee ?

Thanks,

Bean.

    Bean;

    I use DynDNS.org. It is free, but there are some "gotchas" to the free service. For all of the free services that I am aware of, you are "stuck" using some type of "pre-defined" domain name. You can pick the "sub domain", but have to use one of "their" domains at the end. For example you would have to go with propbasic.dnsalias.com or one of the other choices. For a fee ($29.95 per year) you could have them handle the DNS for propbasic.com and be "good to go". When/if I do any hosting at home, I'll have to go that route. There are other plans, depending on how many domains, etc.

    [A thought just hit me as I was typing this. You _may_ be able to get www.propbasic.com to work for free (at least as a test), by defining www as a CN record at your current DNS, and have it re-direct to something like propbasic.dnsalias.com.]

    I use mine to keep an IPSec VPN established between home and work (work is static, home is dynmaic). There is a client app that runs on one of my PCs that keeps the server and dnsalias.com up to date as the address changes. The connection has been very reliable, and I've only experienced a very brief outage in the VPN when the address changes.

    I know there are other providers out there, but haven't had a reason to look. I find it easier/cheaper to have my hosting done eslewhere (using GoDaddy now). Don't need the hardware or bandwidth, maintenance headaches, etc. I've got mixed feelings about GoDaddy, but I haven't really worked at the sites much, so I'm not the right person to ask.

    i've used dyndns.org before and it worked great for me. i can't really offer any suggestions for hosting through dyndns.org because i was running a home based server, i had dyndns poining to my home router ip, the set up port forwarding to my server on my home network. this worked great for me.

    As John R. pointed out above, there are some 'gotchas' to the free service.

    I've used dyndns.org for years (I still do to a degree) and it has always been fantastic. Now I run my own dns servers I tend to use those instead, but I do maintain my dyndns.org addresses and they still work fine.

    I've never used a router or embedded device to update my dyndns details though, it's always been done by a script on my servers.

    You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should use WD40.

    I too use Dyndns.org (www.dyndns.com/). I have my web hosting at bluehost.com. I wanted to be able to access my home network because of data and a NAS and so I setup a domain name at my host and it forwards to my free dynns.org alias.

    @Bean,

    I've got plenty of room on my hosting account. Would you like a spot? PM me.

    I use dyndns as well. Originally I ran it as a program on my PC that updated when my PC was on. But after hunting around in the menu of my newest router I discovered my router could do it automatically. Even better!

    One could use a router that has this capability as Dr. Acula said. I also have a network attached storage device (NAS - a Synology brand) and that too has the capability of DynDns.
