Parts acquisition panic? What is happening here?

I'm referencing the following but adding an additional level of my own brand of panic to the situation:

I just got through designing a PCB only to find that some of the parts that were in stock just last week are now placed on ~1 month back order. Furthermore, in the ten minutes time it took me to place an order this morning, one of my other parts went on back order. Now I'm afraid to even submit my PCB design for manufacture until I've got all the parts in the palm of my hand.

Is this caused by a genuine uptick in market demand, or are we seeing a parts supply crash caused by the credit market BS from last year? Please tell me this is a result of an improving economy and not another symptom of the bankers hard at work earning more of those 7 figure bonuses. Please?

It's nothing more sinister than a symptom of recovery from a recession and the natural lag in resupply. Things aren't nearly as bad now as they were in the mid '80s, though, when it seemed like everything was on allocation. Just be sure to design with multi-sourced jellybean parts as much as you can.

Things will come back in stock - nobody makes any money when they can't sell you any parts. But designing with part substitution in mind is a good idea.

Oh, sure.· Well, try and get a floor manager in Vegas·to open another Blackjack table with that kind of logic.· [He's making more money by not dealing me cards than he would by dealing me cards.· If you don't believe me then go ask him.]

I'm hearing of similar stocking problems in the biotech world but I'm told it's not because demand is increasing: it's because nobody is brave enough to keep money tied up in inventory. I'm hoping The Pilgrim is right about the demand increasing. Brother, can you spare a dime diode?

Besides, the hoarders, gray marketeers, and fifth tier distribution rats that come out of the woodwork in times like these have to feed their families, too. Give 'em a break and pay their 20x markups! (Just don't give 'em your phone number.)

I've liked Octoparts, but sometime ago they stopped being able to show Digi-Key's stock info in the results. octopart.com/

Thanks, Phil, I'm sure we're going to need this for the next few months.

Okay, so it was before I had my coffee this morning but when I first saw that word "Octoparts", what flashed through my mind was a warehouse selling surplus human organs from Octomoms. Good thing the coffee wasn't too far away. shocked.gif
