I bet you guys thought that everything that can be invented with Propeller I has already been invented.

Presenting...

A Propeller based palmistry fortune teller.

Place your hand in front of the USB camera and your fortune for tomorrow will be displayed!

Anybody need a sample for your own crazy experimentation, please PM me.
After all, we already spent a fortune on the large enclosure mould.

Bw........ *pfff*

It looks like you have a miniATX PC board in there? Is that for the (USB?) camera?

Yes, the propeller can't directly read from the USB camera.
It is a mini-ITX board running Windows XP from a USB Thumb drive!
This board is fanless, low profile, runs at 1.6GHz and has a built-in power supply onboard!
There is also a usb Wifi module stuck to the inside wall.

The enclosure has a finger guide and a wrist rest.
It took us one year to design the fanless enclosure.
The entire product consumes only 12 watts when idle.

Truely a masterpiece of design! Did you use statistics to elicit the average distance between the wrist and the fingertips, or did you take your own hand in hand?
Thanks for the info!

Many years ago, I and a friend of mine at English-Electric-Marconi Computers designed and built a machine that detected whether someone was male or female, for a party. We filched all the parts from work. People had to stand with their legs apart and their feet on two metal plates, a button was pressed, lots of lights flashed, uniselectors rotated, and relays clicked, and then one of two bulbs labeled Male or Female lit up. It was very accurate, out of about 50 people it got two wrong. Can anyone guess how it worked?

Not so accurate for Scots.

I think you've got it! In those days, men usually wore dark trousers and girls wore short skirts with sheer stockings (tights hadn't been invented). The two it got wrong were the girl I was with who wore a long black dress, and a chap wearing light coloured trousers. It would probably have got a kilted Scot right if he'd been wearing dark socks.

A Propeller would be ideal for an up-to-date version. All it would need is an ADC for the light sensor, sound generation and video output.

Leon, that's too easy. All the people at the parties you went to were dudes.

Nice looking unit! I'm sure you did spend $$$ getting that molded. I'm preaching to the choir, but:

Plastic injection molds are very expensive, not at all cost effective for small runs.

Vacuum forming is a much cheaper alternative for low volume items, but does require lots of hand fabrication to cut windows, drill holes, and add screw bosses.

We just copied the distance from some mechanical datasheet created by a multinational company.
But we had to extend it longer by 1 cm due to space considerations.

Erco,

Nobody does vacuum forming in our country.
Can vacuum forming make screw stands to mount the PCB and the back cover?
I can't imagine vacuum forming such a complicated enclosure.
I think the best solution is to make injection moulds in a low cost country like ours.

Very cool project. Interesting mix of a PC and the propeller for a finished project.

The enclosure looks a lot like that of a Wyse Winterm 9650XE that had a VIA Mini-ATX and 15" LCD packaged together.
images.google.com/images?q=wyse%209650XE
I have one hacked that is running XP Pro from a 40gb HDD instead of the XP-Embedded that was on the 512MB 40pin IDE flash disk.

(I was going to use it to make my toolbox PC before I got a hold of some FIC IONs)

What exactly is the Propeller's function in this? Just interfacing keypad and LCD?

How do you know if the fortune teller works? I mean, how accurate are the predictions? :)

I'm guessing it runs an algorithm that incorporates some esoteric ancient Chinese secret. Orrr....

No matter who uses it, it displays "You're gullible as all get out." and it's right 100 percent of the time. lol.gif

Besides interfacing the keypad and lcd, it also serves as a watchdog to watch the PC and it's programs
and makes sure the programs are running fine with heartbeat.

If no heartbeat from the PC programs thru the comm port, the propeller will hard restart the PC using it's solid state relay connected to the PC's on-off header.

It's a fortune teller - it doesn't have to be accurate.

This from my morning paper:
Morning paper said...

The "Up Close & Personal" show featuring Montel Williams and psychic Sylvia Browne scheduled for Monday at the Milwaukee Theatre has been canceled. The promoter blamed "unforeseen circumstances."
