My small spaces inspectgion robot

I just wanted to share a robot I made to inspect comercial "cookie and crackers" ovens. the robot will be used to inspect the walls and burners inside a 250' long oven, it needs to no taller than 3-3/4" so it can pass under the burners that are located each 4 feet apart. I implemented one of my R/C pan/tilt camera mounts modified for this uniden wireless camera, there are smaller cameras outthere but this one has great night vision and great resolution, plus the video feed is private been 2.4ghz FHSS.

I'm using parallax servos on the tires and normal futaba servos on the pan/tilt assembly, I laser cut the chassis using 1/8" mdf

Enjoy

That's a very nicely done 'bot you have there!

I've never used MDF before; but, since I have a laser cutter, I'm interested in its properties. How strong is it compared with an equal thickness of plywood? Do the edges laser clean, or does the material flake off?

    Thanks,
    -Phil

MDF is denser than plywood, but doesn't have any grain. It doesn't flex as much as plywood, and I guess I would call it relatively brittle. It also doesn't warp, and is more stable than plywood, both in terms of staying flat, and dimensionally.

You don't want to let it get wet.

Think "particle board" but made from sawdust, not particles.

Is it stronger? Questionable. I'd have to look up the actual strengths, but my "anecdotal" reply would be “depends”. Within its limits, it is more rigid, but beyond the limits, it breaks, it doesn’t bend. It can also tend to split (analogous to plywood delaminating) when you try and flex it beyond it’s limits.

The MDF cuts very nicelly, the MDF I use is very solid,·the laser cuts 1/16" holes very clean and tight, the plywood tends to burn more on the edges,·the quality of the MDF I use is good for small projects and it holds up abuse. you can wet this MDF and it will not come apart unless you beat the heck out·of it, and when it dries it keeps it shape, it doesn't sponge. ·I use the mdf for all my laser cut R/C pan/tilts and camera mounts, is cheaper for me and for my customers, compared to high grade hobby plywood.

Makes me think about a robot to inspect & pull wires under my house. That crawl space is no fun! Make a robot that fits through a removeable vent cover and let it do the dirty work...

Now getting a robot to thread a wire or cable through a hole in the floor will be a good trick. Might need a few extra RELAYS for that kind of precision. :)

YEA! You got that right! It also warps due to chages in humidity.

    Awesome stuff for DIY though.

That little Bot come out nice! I like it.

That is really cool. Can you imagin this paired with an R/C FPV system? That would be really cool.· I always wanted to get one of these for my planes:

    CD:

I noticed in the latest picture that the MDF seems thinner than anything I've seen around these parts (Wisconsin). Did you plane that down, or is MDF available where you that thin?

About the only thing we can get that thin around here is maybe plywood at the "right place", or masonite.

I make Pan/Tilts for RC Airplanes, and I have a universal mount for mini spy cameras.

Here is a video of one of the pods I make for the easy star airplane.

here is a video of the bigger version of the pan/tilt, I updated the design also the new design is implemented on the robot I just did.

I founf this MDF at a local wood supplier, is 1/8" thick and very tight compressed. I need to buy more for some projects I will get you the information on where to buy it. all I can say is that the cost is dirt cheap $8 for a 8'x4' panel.

Wow, so cool. Hopefully I can learn to make my own some day. A friend of mine has an Easy Star, great plane. I have a 25 and a 40 size trainer that would be good for a camera as well.
