I doubt it, the parts for a laser spectrometer probably cost more than I have in this probe. This - http://www.infratec-infrared.com/products_variable-color.htm would be a good option, as it wouldn't require a reference, but they cost around $750 each.
I toyed with the idea of building my own ndir, but decided that at close to I couldn't do it for the $100 range we get ours for. For a one off class experiment, your own laser or ndir would be fun, but not really commercially viable, in my mind. Our probes will probably end up selling in the $500-$750 range.
