Audio headphone jack detection circuit

capacitor C1 is polarized.· Does it have to be polarized in order for this circuit to function properly, including it's natural audio filtering properties?· (I am not very good at the analog stuff...at all.)

No, polarity is not an issue unless you use a capacitor (electrolytic or tantalum) that is polarity sensitive.
