Hall Sensor and 74HC165 on a Propeller

I would like to use a Hall Sensors as a switch that are connected to a 74HC165 on a Propeller. Could anyone recommend an inexpensive Hall Sensor and give me an idea as to what additional hardware I might need to set this up. I will be driving 32 bits (4) chips so I will need 32 of these sensors. They will be within 1.6" of each other. So I need a very focused sensor that will not pickup the magnet 1.6" away.

    RS has lots of them:

The digital output ones have a 5V output.

    mike,

·parallax has melexis hall effects for as inexpensive as anyone, unless they are out of stock. mouser and digikey have them for $5 and $7 respectively. i just built one and

with bs2 i was faced with using count or pulsin. count relies on a time frame and that is a negative. pulsin demands a very quick response and mine was not quick as it involves a slow moving wheel, so neither really fit the bill.

if you go with the melexis, they are expensive.· see the datasheet on digikey to see the connects, which include caps, resistors, and i used indicator leds.

the ic parallax recommends is a buffer and a +5 volt input gives a low output. check that out also on the datasheet at digikey.

    best of luck. jim

mike, with melexis, you'll need to be about 5 mm away from the sensor with your magnet so you may need some lever or other device to get that precise space every time. jim

Thank you for your help. I puchased the Melexis from Parallax and it is close to what I needed. I have found a different Melexis Hall Sensor that is unipolar that I think will be a better fit. I have them on order and they should be here in about a week (did not want to pay for overnight). The one from Parallax is still really cool to play with. I have learned lots from everyone on this site. Many thanks from one who is a novice.
