VGA for dummies

Is there any guide that helps to understand vga drivers? A Guide that explains for example the VGA HiRes Text driver or VGA Text driver from line to line? I know that most of the drivers are commented somehow, but what i need is practically understand the whole thing. So if someone knows a good guide i would be very happy.
